Bill's Status - February 10, 2001

On Wednesday, February 7, 2001 Cmdr. Donaldson had further consultations with the doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.  I am afraid the result was not very encouraging.  The radiologists said that radiation would not be able to kill this specific tumor, but would slow down its growth.  Chemotherapy is usually only effective after a tumor is removed and since Bill's tumor could not be fully removed, they felt that Chemo was not likely to be of great benefit.  There is a new drug, which I can't remember the name of, that they suggested that has fewer side effects and could be used in conjunction with radiation, but again, it will only slow down the tumor's growth.

Bill is now back at the St. Mary's County Rehabilitation Center, in Leonardtown Maryland where is trying to regain some strength after the surgery.
