Even if a MANPAD could reach the jet, that does not rule out other missiles that could also reach it.
Mr. Hull has collected many missile witness accounts in the LI area on other dates, the Stinger part that someone says they found but threw away could have been from another incident.
Bottom line, there's no good reason for Donaldson to have shifted to a MANPAD-only theory.
