I would lean back on the edge of my boat point the Missle straight up and fire at the airplane. The exhaust blast would initially be in the water.

Care to provide an explanation why you would not fire a Stinger this way when there is the photograph of the soldier doing exactly what you said he shouldn't do?
Also would you care to explain why YOU think that a missle fired directly at you from a distance would NOT appear to be going straight up?
